“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” Jeremiah 29:12

“A wing and three prayers!”

Welcome to Cruden Parish Church!  We are a congregation of the Church of Scotland serving the communities in and around the villages of Longhaven, Hatton, Cruden Bay and Whinnyfold. We also extend a special welcome to those unable to be physically present with us this morning and following the service online. Wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, we pray that you may know God’s blessing and presence during this time of worship.

Call to Worship

Have you not known?
                Our God is the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth.
Have you not heard?
                God does not faint or grow weary.
Have you not known?
                God’s understanding is unsearchable.
Have you not heard?
                God gives power to the faint and strengthens the powerless.
Have you not known?
                Those who wait for God will renew their strength
                 They shall soar on wings like eagles.
We come to hear.
                We come to know.
                Thanks be to God..

Let us worship God

CH4 153:  Great is thy faithfulness

1.            Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
                there is no shadow of turning with thee;
                thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not,
                As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
all I have needed thy hand hath provided—
great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

2.            Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
                sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
                join with all nature in manifold witness
                to thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

3.            Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
                thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
                strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
                blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.

Thomas O Chisholm (1866-1960)

Prayers of Approach

Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen

Bible Readings
Isaiah 40:28-31

Do you not know?
    Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
    and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
    and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
    and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
    they will run and not grow weary,
    they will walk and not be faint.
John 14:1-8
Jesus comforts his disciples
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.’
Jesus the way to the Father
Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’
Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’
Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’

Sermon:   ‘A wing and three prayers!’

 CH4 191:  Do not be afraid

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name; you are mine.

1.            When you walk through the waters, 'll be with you;
                you will never sink beneath the waves.

2.            When the fire is burning all around you,
                you will never be consumed by the flames.

3.            When the fear of loneliness is looming,
                then remember I am at your side.

4.            When you dwell in the exile of a stranger,
                remember you are precious in my eyes.

5.            You are mine, O my child, I am your Father,
                and I love you with a perfect love.

Gerald Markland (b 1953)
From Isaiah 43:1-4

Prayers of Intercession

CH4 511:  Your hand O God has guided

1.            Your hand, O God, has guided
                your flock, from age to age;
                the wondrous tale is written,
                full clear, on every page;
                your people owned your goodness,
                and we their deeds record;
                and both of this bear witness;
                one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

2.            Your heralds brought glad tidings
                to greatest as to least;
                they summoned all to hasten
                and share the great King's feast;
                and this was all their teaching,
                in every deed and word,
                to all alike proclaiming:
                one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

3.            Through many a day of darkness,
                through many a scene of strife,
                the faithful few fought bravely,
                to guard the nation's life.
                Their gospel of redemption,
                sin pardoned, life restored,
                was all in this enfolded:
                one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

4.            Your mercy will not fail us,
                nor leave your work undone;
                with your right hand to help us,
                your victory shall be won;
                by morals and by angels,
                your name shall be adored,
                and this shall be their anthem:
                one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

Edward Hayes Plumptre (1821-1891)

Dismissal and Blessing

God of life,
God of hope,
God of all,
lift us with your love
as if we were on eagle's wings.

Sustain us.
Guide us.
Heal us.
Then send us out into the world
that we may love as you love.

And the blessing of God the Father,
God the Son and God the Holy Spirit,
be with you all forevermore.
Amen

Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance
NHS Grampian Chaplaincy Team have decided this year to have an in- person Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance.  The service isn’t specifically to remember people who have died from COVID-19 - though it may include them - but it is to remember all our loved ones who have died, of any cause, in any of the Grampian hospitals or units in this past year at Foresterhill, Dr Gray’s, Roxburghe House, Woodend Hospital, Royal Cornhill Hospital or any of the Community Hospitals.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the 2020 Service was recorded and made available through Social Media. This year, we will return to our usual venue at Queens Cross Church, Aberdeen on the second Sunday in September - Sunday 12th September 2021 - at 3.00pm.

We are restricting the numbers in the Church to 70 and if you wish to attend, we would ask you to book your place by e-mailing: gram.chaplaincy@nhs.scot by noon on Friday 10th September 2021.

Please give us your name, number in your party (maximum of 4) and your contact telephone number. If you have a booked a place and find nearer the time of the Service that you cannot attend, please email gram.chaplaincy@nhs.scot
