I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;
I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
 Ezekial 36:26

Welcome to Cruden Parish Church!  We are a congregation of the Church of Scotland serving the communities in and around the villages of Longhaven, Hatton, Cruden Bay and Whinnyfold. We also extend a special welcome to those unable to be physically present with us this morning and following the service online. Wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, we pray that you may know God’s blessing and presence during this time of worship.

Call to Worship

Sing praises to the Lord,
and give thanks to God’s holy name
for the Lord our God has healed us,
when we cried for help
and restored us in times of deepest despair.

The Lord has turned our sorrow into dancing;
taken our sackcloth from us,
and clothed us with joy.
Sing to the Lord without end,
and give thanks to the LORD forever.
In this time of worship
let the words we see and hear and speak and sing
be transformed by the Word made flesh,

Let is worship God

Hymn 147: All creatures of our God and King

  1. All creatures of our God and King,
    lift up your voices, let us sing:
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Bright brother sun with golden beams,
    clear sister silver moon with softer gleam,
    O praise him, O praise him,
    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

  2. Swift rushing wind so wild and strong,
    High clouds that sail in heaven along,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    New breaking daw in praise rejoice
    And lights of evening find a voice
    O praise him, O praise him,
    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

  3. Cool flowing water, pure and clear,
    make music for your Lord to hear,
    Alleluia, alleluia!
    Fire with your flames so fierce and bright,
    giving to all both warmth and light,
    O praise him, O praise him,
    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

  4. Dear mother earth, who day by day
    unfolds God’s blessings on our way,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    The flowers and fruits that in you grow,
    let them his glory also show:
    O praise him, O praise him,
    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

  5. Let all things their Creator bless,
    and worship him in humbleness,
    O praise him, Alleluia!
    Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
    and praise the Spirit, Three in One:
    O praise him, O praise him,
    Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Prayers of Approach & Lord’s Prayer

A prayer of confession

For all the things we have done wrong in the past
against God and against people,
we now ask the Lord and one another to forgive us.
Lord Jesus, yours are the seasons and the ages.
Give us a new heart and a new spirit:
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Jesus Christ, you are the beginning and the end
of all that is, including our lives.
Make a new beginning with all of us:
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

Lord Jesus, you breathe your Spirit on all creation.
Make our old world new again:
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Have mercy on us, Lord,
and let your forgiveness and love
come down on us day after day.
Lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

 Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen

Bible Readings

Ezekiel 36: 22-32

“Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.
“‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you. I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!

John 14:15-17

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

Sermon   ‘Growing young whilst getting old!’

Hymn 143: Who put the colours in the rainbow

  1. Who put the colours in the rainbow?
    Who put the salt into the sea?
    Who put the cold in the snowflake?
    Who made you and me?
    Who put the hump upon the camel?
    Who put the neck on the giraffe?
    Who put the tail upon the monkey?
    Who made hyenas laugh?
    Who made whales and snails and quails?
    Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
    Who made bats and rats and cats?
    Who made everything?

  2. Who put the gold into the sunshine?
    Who put the sparkle in the stars?
    Who put the silver in the moonlight?
    Who made Earth and Mars?
    Who put the scent into the roses?
    Who taught the honey bee to dance?
    Who put the tree inside the acorn?
    It surely can't be chance!
    Who made seas and leaves and trees?
    Who made snow and winds that blow?
    Who made streams and rivers flow?
    God made all of these!

Prayers of Intercession

Hymn 519: Love divine, all loves excelling.

  1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
    Joy of Heav’n to earth come down;
    Fix in us thy humble dwelling;
    All thy faithful mercies crown!
    Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
    Pure unbounded love Thou art;
    Visit us with Thy salvation,
    Enter every trembling heart.

  2. Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
    Into every troubled breast!
    Let us all in Thee inherit;
    Let us find that second rest.
    Take away our bent to sinning;
    Alpha and Omega be;
    End of faith, as its beginning,
    Set our hearts at liberty.

  3. Come, Almighty to deliver,
    Let us all Thy life receive;
    Suddenly return, and never,
    Nevermore Thy temples leave.
    Thee we would be always blessing,
    Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
    Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,
    Glory in Thy perfect love.

  4. Finish, then, Thy new creation;
    Pure and spotless let us be;
    Let us see Thy great salvation
    Perfectly restored in Thee;
    Changed from glory into glory,
    Till in Heav’n we take our place,
    Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
    Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Dismissal and Blessing

So now we leave this space of worship
Hear again the promise God made to his people long ago:
Do not be discouraged!
Be strong and courageous.
Keep working,
for I am with you.
My Spirit remains with you,
and is living among you.
So do not afraid! (Haggai 2: 4-5)

Go in peace.

May the blessing of God,
the Father, the Son
and the Holy Spirit
Be with you all forever more.
Amen
